I've noticed one of my terrapins is listless and doesn't appear to be eating. I keep my terrapins in a pond all year which is heated in the winter. At the slightest sign of light, (even the garden light at night which illuminates the pond, though not very bright) he is out on a rock basking. Today it was sunny all day and he was out for most of it. When basking he appears to be sleeping and you really have to prod him to get any reaction. The other terrapins are always alert. When he is in the water he appears listless and if at the surface floats with his head down or to one side. Any ideas? Martin.

hi martin, this is most certinaly an infection of the lungs or bladder, we see this alot here at turtle rescue and will need to be treated as soon as... if you have a tank in doors i would place the terrapin in it with the water temp at around 28c treat with methylene blue and if no change in a day or two you will need to consult a vet for an injection, please note if left the terrapin could either die from this or could have this lop sided problem form the rest of its life. the problem here is you will need to check the eye's and nose and if there clear and its feeding then please try the above if not then please seek the vet as soon as...
you can call me if any of the above is not clear on... 01255508713 or 07951033456
regards wayne.

Thanks Wayne. Eyes and nose are clear. What about if I treat the whole pond including the other terrapins- would this harm them? And if any of the other terrapins are in the early stages of this I could catch it before it develops. What do you think?

martin we always treat our ponds regularly with the methylene blue and a top quality pond professional anti snail, this not only does what it says but will kill most leaches and "HYDRA" which can be harmful and spread like mad while the methylene blue controls most of the bacteria. i can forward both e-bay links if required..
if this terrapin is eating and eyes and nose are clear then i would try the tank first for a day or two if no change please book the vet, Mr Bennett at colne Vally in colchester is very good and cheap if yours are dear around you, some are so please shop around..
one last thing if you do buy these items or any from e-bay could we ask you get it through our shopping site please... it offers no risk to you but raises funds for us, the link is on the front page...
regards wayne.

Whilst the UK weather is fine for a healthy turtle, the winters are too long, and the weather too changeable to meet the needs of an ill turtle. You need to get them inside, have the water mid 20's 24 hours a day, and have a good strong basking lamp heating the area to 30+ C, prefereably for 24 hours too for a week, and then review it depending on how they are acting. It's almost certainly a respiratory infection, and the sooner you deal with it, the better chance the turtle has of a swift and complete recovery. Plan for them staying inside all winter too, to make sure they are definitely healthy.
