Are you sure it was duckweed?
Duckweed grows very quickly and soon covers the surface of whatever you grow it in. A few plants can cover a bucket surface in 6 weeks. No special care required just water and sunlight - dirty water from turtle tanks is ideal as it's full of plant nutrients.
Duckweed is so tough it even survived being frozen under 2in of ice last winter! If you live in London I can let you have some of mine free to start you off.

My duckweed has 2 little round leaves attached to a very short central stem. A bucket is fine, mine grows anywhere there's water. Just one thing -are you giving it enough light? It needs to be outside unless you have strong lights on your tank on for several hours/day
