I got asked to post this from Wayne rampling at the main turtle rescue.
"This little girl arrived last Saturday. She had been sold on Preloved along with all the tank and gear etc. The people that bought her realized something was very wrong but had only had their own turtles for a month and so contacted me. They had wanted a second, bigger tank which is why they bought her. They would have kept her, but as brand new turtle owners they didn't feel they knew enough to care for her properly Great work on their part. Soon they found me...and bought her around. When I held her, parts of her shell moved under my fingers. She smelt moldy and her eyes indicated Vit A deficiency. I was really shocked at her condition and immediately told the them that she would most likely not survive. Unfortunately today she was euthanized. our vet ( James ) said there was so much underlying infection and vitamin deficiencies and if she did survive it would take years of intensive treatment, bacterial cultures etc etc. There would have been huge holes under the carapace where the rotten shell would have to be debriefed off. It was better not to put her through that. Over the 2 days I had her I just fed her lots of good food...she had a great attitude and was very hungry... peeled some of the loose scutes off her very carefully ( which i only recommend doing if you hold knowledge ) and cleaned her all over with micro shield. Then I let her wonder around outside in the sun even with snow on the ground and gave her short periods in clean water along with dry-docking. The pictures speak for themselves.
I'll post some now, in the hope people will ask for help before seeing this. The smell when I peeled off the scutes was indescribable... rot and mold and just revolting It lingered with us for hours & for some time to come..... this is Wayne at turtle rescue saddened and not happy... please note these pic's may offend some people.... but if it helps others to ask for help before hand and we hope she finds real happiness in our garden something she could not find in life through no fault of her own"
