I've had my turtles for a while, (african helmet head) and a musk. just recently the male (helmet head) has started to attack the musk which is female . Is this just a man thing?? lol I'm going to separate them for the safety of the musk, just wondered if this was a normal occurence or him just being a bully!

It's a species thing not a sex thing. Sadly a very common problem. I've recently rescued a poor scared little male map that was kept with a much larger African female. Both had been bought at the same time as babies. The map is now happy with his own kind in my map species tank while the African has her own tank.
Basically African helmets are aggressive mainly carnivorous predators, known for their hunting skills in the wild. As the African grows bigger, maybe 4x musk size, it may view its tankmate as dinner! That poor little musk must be removed immediately before it gets badly injured. If you cannot have two separate tanks, you should put one of them up for adoption on htis forum.
Those two species should never have been sold to be kept together -another case of petshops putting profit before animal welfare

AHT are aggressive to everything, and while it's not a case of them thinking of the other turtle as "dinner", they are extremely territorial and don't share well with anything, not even the same species. Musks should really not be put in the same tank as anything else though as they are smaller and worse swimmers than most other species available, so are almost always the ones on the receiving end of any aggression going.

hello, I'm new to this forum. I have a three year old male (I think) map terrapin who is on his own in tank. I love him dearly (unlike my children who pestered me for him and now are bored with him) but I worry that he is not happy as he is all on his own. I want to keep him but if it would be a bad idea to introduce another now I think I should rehome him to someone or somewhere with more interesting living conditions - he has a large tank and basking area - is this enough?
hope someone has some advice as I feel sad just looking at him and he is so lovely.

Hiya... welcome to the turtle rescue forum.. In my experience I have all my turtles in at least pairs. Only when you mix different breeds or different sizes you have to be carefull. Male map turtles have a long tail and long tallens on their front claws but this would be more apparent if you had another to compare with. What size is he and what size is your tank? You are going to need a 4ft tank at least for two adult map turtles but please dont give up on him as they are very fascinating creatures when you get into them. What part of the country are you in as I'm sure there will be many rescue centres and people trying to rehome turtles near you in your search for a friend for you little friend. If your in the north east I can help.. x
