Been out in the garden today to do some measurements and bat about some design options.......
I was going to be making a rockery style pond that had a nice kidney bean shape to it with a basking island in the larger end.......
and then.........
I have totally changed my mind!.
Now I am building a 17ft x 7ft oblong pond. Made of building blocks, clad with decking boards. The pond will fill the bottom of our garden and be right upto the brick built shed, with good reason for this!. The brick built shed will then house a smaller 6ft x 4ft block pond with UV lights etc. There will be a hole in the wall so that the terrapins will be able to go from the indoor pond to the outdoor pond so they have the best of both worlds!.
And the best bit!!.......
....... The opening from the shed to the outdoor pool is going to be covered in Rocks and made to be a nice cascading waterfall with a cave so the Terrapins will have to go through the waterfall to get into the indoor pool and vise-versa!!.
Now the important bit!....
I am having a 3kw pond/pool heater and a home made filteration system (always had ponds and for years had our own filter systems that have proved to be very good/reliable). The question is, what pump should I use?. I remember when I had my Terrapins in a tank in my bedroom as a kid that the bigger ones would destroy anything that got in there way!. They used to break the heaters on a regular basis and rip out the under gravel filter tubes like they were nothing!. Any idvice would be much appreciated.
Also what about waste?. I remember back to when I had terrapins before, I used to have to clean the tank out every week as it got really smelly and dirty with 5 terrapins in there!. How much of a problem will this be in a pond??. I am not too worried about the big outdoor pond as the filter will cope as long as the pump can pump out the crap (for want of a better word), but the small indoor pond (that I plan to keep them in when the bad weather comes) will take more keeping clean (I presume).
Again any advice on anything related would be very much appreciated!!.
Thanks in advance!!
Scotty.
P.s. I will be uploading pictures as I go!. (as long as pics are allowed on here??)
