Wayne.. what is the difference between razor backs and a mississippi map turtles.. I thought I have two razor backs when I saw the one show video but I see in the ads, adverts to rehome map turtles which look very similar if not the same.. now I'm confused. What size do they grow to.. I've got a potential new home for a map turtle to go with a 4 n 1/2 " male ? x

hi, the Mississippi maps tend to have a map colored shell when babies hence the name, most of this will fade as they grow and are the most common of all maps, the razor backs tend to have very sharp peeks on the shell when rubbed from back to front where the shell meets in the middle or down the spine with slightly more ridges also there is a map turtle called a black knob where they have what likes like black knobs on the tip where the shell meets in the middle and down the back... there are more but these are the most common found in the u.k. sizes vary in all types but if your re-homing one i would suggest one the same size or feed them separately to ensure they both get equal foods.. hope this helps you... regards Wayne...

Shell shape is far more domed in musk turtles, and the shell is a lot darker. The head shape is also different, and their plastron is a different shape. Post a photo and I can say for sure which species you have, because there are several species of maps which look a lot more similar to each other than they do to any species of musk!

Maps and razorbacks are also completely difference species. Maps are of the family Graptemys and razordback musks are of the family Sternotherus, along with the common musk. Maps are great baskers and good swimmers; Razorback musks are termed bottom walkers, although in the wild they are very often found in deep water. The most common species of map turtle found in the UK are the False map, of which the mississippi map is a sub species and the Ouachita map. In both species the males will reach approx 5.5 " SCL and the females approx 10.5" SCL Maps can sometimes be referred to as ridgebacks, or sawbacks... but razorback refers to a different species altogether A razorback musk on the other hand, will max out at approx 6" SCL but will be quite bulky
