turtle rescue have seen some things in our time here over the years and to be honest with you we thought we have seen it all after 21 years, thought wrong... a terrapin has come here with the most severe case of shell rot we have ever seen. how its shell is holding together we really don't know, the prognosis is grave and we can only pray for a good outcome, but i fear its only a matter of time and although it is feeding well and seems happy to have clean water and food slashing around as they do it really hits home when even me starts to reach at the smell this can cause when trying to clean it. my neighbors said is that supposed to be like that.... urrrrrrrrrrrr no.... is all i could say, I've listed this in the memory section as i feel it would take a miracle at Christmas time to help this terrapin despite our efforts and this sort of thing that we deal with on a day to day bases but hay they happen right...? neelix my son asked is that a turtle dad.... what can you say... not sure it will be a Christmas we all will savoring...

He's in good hands now.. if anyone can help him you can.. even if its just to make his remaining time on earth comfortable.. if he's feeding and seems happy for the moment don't give up in the little one yet. xx

Christmas is a time for miracles...you never know. My turtles and I send him our love and hope for recovery.
Well done for taking on such a bad case with so little hope of reward. Whatever the outcome, he is in the best place right now At least he has a chance of recovery, receiving the best possible care with Wayne's 24hour nursing and Ben the vet;s supervision.
Even if he doesn't make it at least he is no longer in so much pain and his last days were happy, being well fed loved and cared for. Let us know how he is getting on Wayne and don't give up just yet.

update on turtle with shell rot.... well we have taken drastic action on helping this terrapin with shell rot with the help of a fellow turtle rescue center, we we're a little lost to be honest and with over 21 yrs experience i have truly not seen this kind of abuse on any animal in my life... so we were a little lost to be honest so we had to look a little further... for answers... well the answer came from the states from a man who simply helps these animals with no regognition... ummmmmm sounds like someone i know... anyway the info he has offered was a little strange to say the least but these are desperate times here and we are trying a new treatment that will help we hope... yeah i know we hope... but we are really stuck even with all our experience something we come by very seldom but we are not proud to seek advice if needed to save a life...
we will of course let you know how it goes before we release the info...
regards Wayne for once saying he is stumped... in order to save one that needs us never seen before..

This sounds promising Wayne. Hopefully it may be possible to save this poor turtle. Well done for having taken the best advice when faced with an almost impossible case. Saving a life is more important than stubborn pride and it takes a great man to acknowledge that he needs help sometimes. American turtle rehabilitation centres are great sources of info for desperate cases. They deal with horrifically injured native turtles including ones run over by cars or mauled by boat propellers and manage to save many of them. Did they recommend the Maracin treatment -it's supposed to be very good. What is the history of this poor abused turtle? How did it get into such a state -was it deliberate cruelty, careless neglect or a sad case of its owner dying or being too ill to care for it?

turtle rescue would just like to let everyone following the plight of this poor terrapin with the worst case of shell rot i have seen in all these years and even despite trying new methods that not only us and other centers have used, its with sad regret to inform everyone that it died of its injury's although we feel under laying infections that drugs could not battle was to blame. if I'm honest it seemed happy and feeding after a while and even made us laugh at times the way it strived to just be a turtle splashing around and even with round the clock care it surpassed to its injury's today, we feel that we made new Friends here at turtle rescue as a result of this animals end yet take comfort in that time we spent was worth every effort that one or two would have seen as a waste of time, yes we are so tired but its what we do here... regards Wayne....

I am so sorry to hear the poor turtle has died in spite of all your efforts. As you say it probably had some deep rooted infection which was resistant to drugs and the turtle was too far gone to save when you got it. You and the vet did your very best, no one could ask for more and at least it was happy and loved in its final days on earth.
If only it had come to Turtle Rescue sooner. What is the story of this poor turtle - was it found abandoned in a pond, dumped on your doorstep or handed in by someone?
Education is the best way to make sure no other turtle has to suffer this way. Continue with your good work of spreading the message about responsible turtle care perhaps you can use him/her as an example so some good will come from its sad short life

Not sure you want to be reminded of this but I was so sad when I read this. What did they do to the poor little thing?

hi, this was not a case of what they did do, it was a case of what they didn't do, poor conditions, no lighting and very crap diet... we tried so hard to help it but to be honest even with the best of help being offered in the end it was a kind release.. we buried it in our garden.. regards Wayne.
