Hi,
I just opened my pot of food and saw a load of mites running around in it. Are these likely to be harmful to my turtles?
Do I need to get rid of the food and get new, or is this a normal occurance?
The food is the deluxe food from this site, so contains a lot of organic materials etc.

I bought 3 kinds of food off this website last week. I opened all 3 bags to feed my turtle collection and they didn't have any bugs. Maybe yours contained some ingredients which had been delivered recently and were already contaminated with bugs when the supplier sent them.
Don't worry, bugs are actually good for turtles - live protein food! I have fed mine insects including any flies and moths that fall into their tank. In fact some people feed their turtles crickets too. Don't feed them slugs and land snails though as these carry lungworm parasites in UK.

hi rugby, sorry to hear that you have mites in your food, we're not really sure just how this has happened to be honest with you, we buy all our ingredients from a "DEFRA" approved supplier and these ingredients are also quality controlled from here prior to packing by myself. most the foods are organic as you will know as we try offer these animals everything they would find in the wild we do add the minerals and vitamins via our vet and all foods that leave here do so in the best health we can, to be honest we have double checked our stock here to try and get to the bottom of this because we would not want anybody that supports us in buying our products not being happy for any reason, all the foods here have no mites in any of it so i can only assume that one part of the ingredients has had at some time been infected after packing. we soly rely on these sales to help all the turtles we take in here and this is the first case of this we have ever heard even after all these years nearly 22, turtles will eat alsorts of bugs and any thing found on dead animals in the wild and this would include leeches / mites / insects and even bacteria, so i really don't think it would hurt them, however having said this we will of course send you another bag in the morning. all the feedback on e-Bay under ( turtle food from rescue centre ) would simply tell anyone after all these years we do have these animals welfare at heart, they cant all be wrong, we will send this first thing in the morning 2ND class and can only say sorry for any trouble this may have caused that was truly beyond our control regards Wayne owner of turtle rescue...

Hi
This is the first time that this has happened also. I have previously ordered many times and have ALWAYS been happy. This post was simply just to ensure that I wouldnt be harming my turtles!!! If anyone is considering buying from Wayne and turtle rescue I would STRONGLY recommend it! Not only are you getting a top class product tailor made for turtles, rather than economic gain, you are also providing an income for a highly deserving charity aimed at helping turtles and ensuring that Wayne and his team are able to deliver good advice based on their many years of dealing with these animals!!!
To Wayne and the team, thanks for all of your help!!

Thanks for endorsing and recommending Turtle Rescue food.It really means a lot to Wayne and the turtles because it is the main source of income for the Centre.
I am glad to hear that you have been happy with it too. I have brought up 5 little ones on the Baby Turtle Food and they have doubled in size. Turtle Rescue food is also the only kind of dried food I can get my African Pelomedusa to eat. Believe me I have tried everything even koi sticks to try and wean her off prawns and fish but she is a very fussy eater and wouldn't eat any other pellets.
Please use the Turtle Rescue sponsored website for your Christmas shopping and ask your family and friends to use it too. All major brands and stores are available through the site which links directly to their websites. You can also save money on special offers and discounts which are only available through the Easyfundraising site
