hello, I'm new to this web site, but I've had yellow bellies for about four years now. I've read up on all sorts of sites about how to keep terrapins etc. but its come to that time now where i need to put them outside, the tank i have them in reasonably ok, but my pump had packed in big style, so I'm getting a smelly house slowly -yak! i need advice on a cheap and good method of keeping them both outside, only trouble is i have a large Tibetan mastiff dog also and i don't want him getting his paws on them. i need a quick reliable way please of doing this as well because I'm off work at the moment with a back problem and I'm on half pay to make things worse,so a new large pump is out of the question. All this extra water changing is doing me no good at all any help that anyone can give me would be most appreciated, i will thank you all in advance. here's hoping ;D

DON'T put your turtles outside It's far too cold and they will die quickly. Turtles that spend all year outdoors would have hibernated 3 months ago. It;s far too late now. Anyway outdoor ponds also need filters, even bigger and more powerful(and expensive!) than tanks so putting your turtles outdoors even in summer won't solve the problem. Their water will still get filthy even if you can;t smell it any more.
Outdoor enclosures need to be100% secure from attack by foxes and dogs which can kill turtles. Turtles are also expert escapers so high fences(min3ft) with a net fastened securely on top are essential. Dan our webmaster can advise you on this as he had to secure his pond after it was attacked and damaged by foxes.
I;m afraid the only solution is to get a new filter pump ASAP before your turtles get sick. They can get eye and respiratory infections (fatal!) from dirty water. Don't worry, this doesn't have to cost a fortune. With 20 adopted turtles to support and no permanent job I know what it's like. You can get very powerful internal filter pumps cheaply, sent by post from about £13 including postage for 1200l/hr, cheaper than used ones on Ebay. Phone Mark at All Pond Solutions on 01895437611. I recently bought a few internal filters from him. Two 800l/hr ones are doing an impressive job in my musk and map turtle species tanks. A larger 1200l/hr version keeps my large tank with several adult sliders spotless, Its performance is awesome, gushes like a fountain and only needed cleaning after 3 weeks. NOTE: I don't work for All Pond Solutions and have no personal connection with them other than as a customer.
