Turtle rescue does have from time to time a turtle that needs a home for life, which is where any donation goes to support. yesterday See's us taking in this female yellow bellied terrapin that will remain here for the rest of her life... why... well the owner freely admits he was misinformed from "THE LOCAL PET STORE" and tried his best to cater for such an animal but with little knowledge and in-proper foods and tank space this was the result, i have no doubt the owner was doing his best on the info received and the fact that he drove 4hrs each way to simply get here as to offer it a loving home with our background and regular vet care and for his donation to which we hear a lot but seldom done.... but it really goes to show what misinformation can lead to, with shell damage beyond repair now and life looking bleak until now leaves me to wonder why do people leave it too late to ask the simplest of questions... something this could have stopped.... Poor thing. That looks really horrific, worst case i've ever seen. Still at last this poor turtle will get the proper care and food it needs. if anyone can save her, Wayne will.

Aaarh ... god love her!!! Pet shops have a lot to answer for!! ... by saying what the prospective buyer wants to hear in the pursuit of a sale and not the truth for the benefit and well being of the turtles... and organisations like ourselves here at Turtle Rescue have to deal with the aftermath. Often as in this case, misinformation and lack of basic knowledge can have devastating effects by generally well meaning owners and is totally unnecesssary and could be avoided. At least in her twilight years she will be safe, she is the best place ever and will receive quality love and care xxx

There should be a law to prevent pet shops deliberately mis selling unsuitable pets and/or deliberately giving new owners false information like "it will grow to the size of the tank". Actually Trade Descriptions Act also applies to pets I'm sure.It just needs to be enforced and unscrupulous petshops reported.Maybe we should start a campaign and petition MPs to ensure prospective pet owners are given correct info and sold the right pet.
I adopted a male YB that was sold to his former owners as a female red ear. They weren't told about the eventual size it would grow to either and the poor turtle lived in its original 10in x 18in tank that it had as a baby with a huge filter, heater, rock and plastic plants. He literally had to climb over the filter to turn around! His shell was in a bad way and lumpy though nothing like that poor turtle Wayne has just got. Glad to say that after a year with lots of good food, space to swim and walk around he shed old retained scutes and is now a real beauty

Even worse, they claim that maps, YB ans cooters grow 1-6in! As we know females of these species can reach 10in+ and even male sliders could exceed 6in. My 2 largest males are at least 7in
False information about adult size is one of the major problems with turtles either suffering serious health problems from being kept in a few inches of water in a tiny tank all their lives or even dumped n ponds when owners realise they will have to get a large tank as their pet has grown 4x larger than they were told it would
