Hi everybody, I'm new to the forum so nice to meet you all. The reason I'm posting is I'm slightly concerned over my Eastern Painted Turtle Shell. Her shell has always shed it's scutes with no issues, and I was regularly finding pieces on the bottom of the tank, but recently it seems they're not coming off as often, and her shell always seems to have a lot of scutes looking like they're meant to be coming off, as they're slightly raised and coppery. Should I be worried that they're not falling off and her shell never seems to have many un raised scutes, or is it just natural. I will get a photo if needs be if you don't understand how I mean. It's hard to explain lol Thankyou in advance, Ben.

Your turtle may ned a high calcium diet to help shed retained scutes. First of all try feeding - shrimps and prawns with heads and tails on
fish heads tails backbones (scraps from fishmonger or leftover from your meals) tinned fish like mackeral, sardines small whole fish whitebait wheatgerm pellets, the kind fed to koi
Also contact Wayne for special food-Turtle Rescue sells calcium enriched turtle food to help with shedding and avoid problems long term Lasrly, is your turtle basking long enough to allow its shell to dry out? try to encourage basking -check your heat lamp temperature is high enough

Hi yea, she basks all the time, i was more worried my temps may be too high, can this be a problem? I don't think they are as I have checked before. Her shell also looks very rough almost, but she seems happy enough and always wanting food so that's a good sign. Thankyou for the quick response!

I certainly can, I can tell you the tank specs now and will get some photo's later. The set up is a 36 x 15 x 12 (lxdxh) with a fluval 105 external filter. We have a clamp lamp either end, one for heat and one for UVB, and the UVB was changed recently as they do deteriorate with age. Under the heat they have a basking rock which they can get on. And the east painted, 'oopsie' shares her tank with a peninsula cooter, 'Daisy'. As is guess I'd say the eastern painted is about 5 inches but I will check again. Thankyou for your help.
