we are seeing a lot of cases from members of turtles & terrapins showing large red sores or red skin or shell , this is called red lining and can be found around this time of year. it's a strain of bacteria that that can be present in the cleanest of tanks and causes any scratch or injury to take on a red aspect, this is caused when a turtle / terrapin has a scratch/injury either on the skin, shell or mouth and the bacteria gets in the cut causing the red sight. good news is that this can be treated with methylene blue and raising temps although will take time and if used correctly will keep it away for future use but please call me before use, 22 cases in 3 weeks means this is rife right now so please check your loved ones and contact us if needed. regards Wayne at turtle rescue.

Is this red bacteria serious - can it lead to dangerous infection like septicaemia if untreated? I will inspect all mine carefully. I have noticed that they do occasionally have pinkish patches on their necks this year but it seems to be normal with my sliders. All my tanks are well filtered and cleaned out weekly with 50-100% water changes so water quality is very good.

in studies of these animals many, many bacteria are around in the summer but many will die due to temp changes although red strain seems to be a little more resilient and seems to hang on. in temp controlled set UPS it hangs on for the winter months and can be spread by air born spores and once in any ones set up would thrive even in the cleanest set UPS. if untreated then yes these can cause internal infections that can be harmful to any turtle / terrapin and as we have seen a massive increase in e-mails regarding this red strain then all we are asking is to keep an eye out. methylene blue used regularly would combat this at source as it kills many, many forms of bacteria but it would seem many either have not heard of this or even use it... better than what could result and one bottle for around the £5 mark would last the average keeper yrs... no brain-er really. people ask me about this methylene blue all the time and i keep on about it... but you know what it works. cheaper than vet costs and heart ache. regards Wayne.

Hi Wayne, do you have any photo's of this as a reference of what to look for. Also is there any other symptoms to go along with this apart from the red lining itself? Thanks.
