Hi my name is Julie and I am new to this site. I am desperately looking for a new loving home for my 5 year old yellow belly called Elliot. I was going to put Elliot into my pond as he has nearly out grown his tank the trouble is I've found out that we have protected crested newts in our pond and he will eat them. So as upset as I am I am looking for someone to have Elliot and give him a new loving home. I am not an irresponsible owner I just can't afford a huge new home for him. If you would like to rehome Elliot please let me know I am in the Rye East Sussex area.

So sorry to hear about your problem with the poor turtle having protected newt "squatters" in his pond.Would you keep Eliot if I could let you have a 120cmx70cm mini indoor pond for £26? I use them for my turtles and they make great cheap homes.

Hi Julie.. I understand your problem but please dont put him in your pond unless it is heated.. over the years their has been much debate over turtles in ponds in this country.. there are turtles in local parks and lakes that have been dumped.. but its a similar situation as you will get a smoker that will argue that that they know someone that lived till there were in their nineties and smoked all their lives.. this does not make it safe to smoke and that its not good for you. These turtles suffer terrible hardship especially if they heve spent the early part of their lives as a pet and struggle to fend for themselves... responsible keepers, even the most experienced will be looking at bringing them in as the weather gets colder. Bottom line.. these creatures need to be kept at 22-26 degrees at all times. Hibernation by most keepers is not an option as there is no guarantee that they will survive. Two adult turtles can live in a 4ft x 1.5ft square tank comfortably which is not too big and you can pick them up cheap on ebay or your local free ads. xx
