After a bit of advice from anyone. Just about to create a setup with a 350L 4ft tank. Going to construct a "sit on top" type basking area. Not sure what Turtles yet, may be looking at Musk/Map & possible a Yellow Bellied or RES, especially if i can pick a male as i dont intend a tank upgrade. Was wondering whe people thought about tank mates i.e fish. Look on you tube & loads of people appear to have success keeping the two together or is it just conveniently staged for the video clip. I would create a small area for the fish to get respite from being chased but is this enough? Do i go for tough large fish such as plecs & parrot fish or small fast fish like tetras etc do i introduce fish first or turtles first etc Would love to hear your thoughts, also advice on if you think the turtle varietys will get on? Many Thanks Nige

Fish are a bad idea for many reasons 1. Fish are food as far as turtles are concerned. Fasy ones stand a better chance of getting away but sooner or later they will be eaten. It's a waste of money buying expensive parrot cichlids as well as cruelty to fish. 2. Turtles are messy and produce a lot of waste. It is unlikely the water in the tank will meet the high standards needed for tropical fish like cichlids even with excellent filtration. 3. Large plecos >8in are less likely to be eaten as they are armoured but they could still have their tails bitten off and produce a lot of poo which adds to the bioload and makes the pollution in the tank worse.
RE mixing turtle species. Maps usually get on well with sliders and musks. I put my male map in with the musks sometimes when he is bothering the female maps to give the girls a break. He gets on well with musks.

Hi Nige, before I begin, sorry to oppose turtlegirl with her reply. I keep fish with my turtles, I have 5 gourami blue ones, and they never have a problem with my turtles, They all went in, and only one has been eaten, as for the others they've been in the tank for coming up two years, and its not as if my turtles are too small to eat them neither. The amazing thing is, one of the gourami actually will swim and hide out of the way with the turtles as I clean the tank, its almost as if it finds protection rather than a threat. I also have 6 platies, originally ten, and the 6 have lasted around 6 months or more now, plus one shark, the other one did get eaten. I think so long as the fish are introduced whilst the turtles are being fed, so long as the fish wise up quick they may survive. Its never 1oo percent mind, I cant guarantee you that, as there is a lot of factors that can be different. Id just suggest, start with some medium 'toughish fish' and don't spend lots in case they do get eaten..
