I was wondering if anybody could help. My terrapins tank is normally clean, has a good filter etc. Over the last week a thick layer of white round spots has formed on the tank. Scooping it away doesn't help, it just grows back. My terrapin is basking less and his eyes look a bit strange, but he is eating. Does anybody know what this stuff is and is it harmful?

When you say white spots, do you mean on the inside of the glass or do you mean in the water.. does it smell? As for his eyes... what do you feed him on... a very common problem i come across is vitamin A deficiency on too many peeled prawns... once in a blue moon is o.k but if feeding prawns regularly they must have the shells on.. x

It's over the surface of the water and gathered at the edges it looks like algae but is white. They don't smell and he gets fed a mixture of prawns and dried food like mealworms and pellets. Maybe it is a vitamin A deficiency with his eyes and the stuff on the tank is a coincidence. Thanks for your help

Just to clarify, he gets fed on the duluxe mix from turtle rescue, he's 8 yrs old and normally really healthy, he is having problems opening his eyes, seem a little swollen. I will empty the tank tonight although have done several water changes and this white stuff returns after about a week??? Please help its doing my head in, hate seeing the wee guy sad what is meth blue & where can i get it? the white spots form on the surface and edge of the water, evetually joining up creating a filf over the surface, more seems to collect around the water coming back in from external filter???

If turtle does not improve, take him to the vet straight away. Lethargy and too much basking suggests more serious illness which could be dangerous. Swollen eyes in turtles have 3 main causes 1. Vit A deficiency causes eye swelling.Get some cod liver oil and apply a drop to outside of eyes daily. If you have cod liver oil capsules, prick them and squeeze out oil. Also good if you can get him to take a tiny drop orally 2. RI respiratory infection. This is fatal and can kill in a few days unless turtle gets antibiotics immediately. Apart from swollen eyes, turtle will have respiratory symptoms like wheezing and noisy breathing; bubbles or discharge from nose 3. Eye infection, less common but can happen if eye is scratched and bacteria get in the wound
Meth blue is a strong blue dye which kills bacteria in water -and stains evrything blue so be careful when handling it. You only need to add a few drops to water until it is pale blue. The colour will fade away naturally in a couple of days. You can buy meth blue for about £4 on Ebay or petshops that deal with fish. Also online pet sites inc like Love pets.com who currently have meth blue on special offer for around £2,50 while stocks last.

this sounds like bacteria acularis, its a bacterial infection that comes from the gut and spreads well in heated tanks, it looks look fat on water sticking to the glass and plants, i would recommend a total clean out and start using "methylene blue" this can be found on e-Bay or any good aquatic store and combats bacterial and fungal infections, most of you will know that we used this here for years at turtle rescue but please ring me before you even open it as it does stain if spilt on carpets and for the correct use, you can call me direct on 01255508713 or 07951033456 and i will be happy to advise on it's use, regards Wayne from turtle rescue.
