Hi there, new to this site, though not to keeping; turtles, terrapins, tortoises, geckos, tropical fish, pond koi, and other, more hairy/furry critters... you get the picture...!!! I arrived here by accident, whilst looking for a baby map turtle as a long awaited present for my 19 year old son... I have been involved in dog/cat rescue, and adoption for years, but did not know there was a turtle rescue site in this area of the UK - I only live in Hartlepool. I am keen to know more, and particularly to know if you have young map, or even young musk turtles available for re-homing. It may be that I could offer some kind of help too, as I have lots of time on my hands... ;D

Hi again... thanks to this site, I have just taken possession of 2, 18 month old turtles - 1 ia a yellow bellied slider, the other a red neck slider, They are both so sweet, following as you move your finger along the outside of the tank. They were, very sadly, in need of a new home, as previous owner concerned re. salmonella risk whilst pregnant. I know she had approached turtle rescue about re-homing them; so pure coincidence I was looking.... ;0) I will now be happily browsing your shop area, and no doubt making use of the wealth of knowledge you have, and that I can now happily share....

Hi there Jacqui, we have only just been made aware of the turtle rescue in this area... we, (my 2 sons and I), have always been nuts about any animals, indeed we used to adopt/foster dogs/cats for the RSPCA... until I contracted Rheumatoid Arthritis in 2009, and had to stop because of increasing disability. My eldest son fell in love with a small musk turtle at the pet shop, and we were going to buy some, but decided to try and see if there were any in need of a home, or some help first.... old habits die hard!. We ended up rescuing 2 small sliders - the ones that you had advised the then owner, to advertise; as in need of a new home... it was obviously meant to be, and we are already besotted with them, they are such cute characters... They are housed in a 3 ft tank - which is ok at the moment, but we have upgraded the heating/lighting/filtration, as that which came with them was barely adequate... Ideally we would like to make an outdoor enclosure - heated, and therefore usable most of the year, as we already keep koi and ornamental gold-fish in a raised pond, and can link into the existing filtration. It would be nice then to perhaps offer a permanent home to other needy turtles... I would like to discuss best sizes/numbers with you, and also see if I am able to help in some way at present... Be in touch soon. X

Hi and welcome to the Forum. Congratulations on adopting those two lovely young turtles. You made the right decision. I wish more people would consider adopting turtles that needhomes instead of buying from shops, thus encouraging breeding for profit and/or importation of captured wild turtles.
As you are discovering sliders are very friendly and love to interact with humans. They are my favoutite turtles and make excellent long lived pets (I have adopted 7 rescued/unwanted ones), much more fun than musks which hate being handled.
Offers of help are always welcome, especially as Jacqui is currently caring for about 50 unwanted turtles.

Hi turtlegirl, thanks for the welcome... Yeah, we've fallen in love already!!! The small red eared, is a real sweetie; though a little shy at the moment. The yellow bellied is almost twice the size... twice as greedy too... but he acts all tough, hissing, (didn't know this...!), and initially, trying to snap at you - he does follow your finger though, and will let you pick him up, so I think it is just an act of bravado on his part... We have improved the tank set up, as it was barely adequate, but even though they now have a large basking area, they appear reluctant to come out of the water - is this normal; I thought they should come out daily/allow their shells to dry out...? Any info/help appreciated; never too late to ask/learn... X
