Hello I've been looking into getting a turtle after I move house (currently in the slow process of buying, but hoping to be moved in before Christmas). I'm still in the research stage and I've got an idea of what I'd like but there are so many different breeds and different places to acquire unwanted turtles that I'm feeling a bit stuck! I'd definitely prefer to adopt a slightly older turtle - I'm 23 and the idea of taking on a pet that's going to live longer than my entire life time so far seems very daunting! I'd also like to be able to go and have a look at some different breeds in person and meet the turtle first rather than just seeing pictures on the internet. I don't want to buy a tank just yet as I want the set up to be right for the breed I get, and I don't know what breed I will end up with. I'm looking at around a 300L (4ft/120cmx50cmx50cm) aquarium though, so a male slider, map or a smaller painted look like good options currently. Diamondback terrapins look beautiful but don't seem to be available in the UK at all. I don't want to buy from a pet shop/breeder when there are so many that need re-homing. I'd like to find a place where I can go and see some adoption options and talk to someone about how to look after them, what they need now and will need in the future before committing to anything. If anyone has any recommendations for places (in England) to go to see/talk about turtles I'd love to hear about them!

Depending on where you live, you could visit one of our Rescue Centres in Essex Cambridge or Durham The centre managers will be able to advise you on care and selection of hte right turtle for you. You will also be able to see and choose from many turtles there who need new loving homes If you are close to London I have two healthy sliders ready for adoption which I brought up from babies

I live in Nottingham, but I visit Cambridge and London a few times a year so either of those is doable. How far is it ok to transport a turtle by car?
Do you have the address/opening times for the Cambridge centre? I can't find the details on the website.
