common question's here at turtle rescue are.... are these animals easy to keep....? was thinking of getting one for my girl friend / boy friend...? i was told by the pet store...? these are now getting to big...? they keep trying to bit me....? what other food's can we feed them...?
the answers to all these are....
yes they are easy to keep if your willing to spend a little time everyday on them rather than just 1 hr a week...( and get set up first which does not have to be expensive) 5 Min's here is so much better than the hour once a week... before you start to think about taking these on please do your home work first... we pick up the pieces here so can tell you we see this all the time... we don't judge anyone here as most have been mistold... so here goes.. lets come down to earth...
easy to keep.... yes providing your willing to do your bit everyday... from cleaning to handling and offer the right foods.... & care..
if your getting one for a loved one on a whim... DON'T... please do your home work first.. these can live for over 30yrs if cared for properly and get to quite a size... its a massive part of your life...
was told by the pet store.. while not trying to put the good pet shops down... a lot of pets shops will tell you what you need to know if you have no knowledge of these animals to get you to buy this... buy that... the good pet stores won't mind you asking questions that you know the answer to.... so ask us for the questions to as and we'll give you the right answers that you need to hear... anyone with a good knowledge of these animals will be your best friend... if not us... a bad one will give you and your turtle grief...
most of these turtles /terrapins will get to quite a size... around the size of a dinner plate.... if in doubt please just ask us first... there are One's that will stay quite small... so ask..
the keep biting me is down to you....... quite simply we find here at turtle rescue that handling your turtle / terrapin for a few minutes here and a few minutes there... every time you pass them will cure this... if we left you alone in a phone box for a week you would welcome some company... believe me... treat this animals as part of the family... and respect them their not just to look at..
as for foods if you have done your home work then we won't need to answer this... but we will.. you will have other foods around the house that you can offer most turtles / terrapins and a good food guide comes with all our foods but if in doubt again please just contact us via our site or ring us...
bottom line here fellow turtle lovers is please look into it first... we can offer you all the help you need after nearly 21yrs this June but it comes down to you.... having said all this we have never looked back and these very adorable misunderstood animals are so rewarding and can even be very esstentail part of the family if cared for with knowledge first hand....
regards Wayne...
