Hi folks.
I have two map turtles. They are from the same shop so presumably they are the same age. One has the standard oval shaped shell and seems to be growing longer but the other one is still very circular. Its growth seems to be concentrated on widening rather than lengthening with the result that bridge between the carapace and plastron looks unusually stretched. Hopefully another growth spell will even this out but Im looking for reassurance just the same.

I have observed the same thing with my 3 little map turtles. two of them (the boys =longer front claws, longer tails) have an oval carapace almost ending in a point at tail end. The other which looks like a female (short claws, short tail) is almost perfectly round. She's just as healthy and active as the others with good appetite, though. Is your "Round" turtle female? Maybe it's to do with the sex of a map turtle? Wayne is the best to advise on this

Mine are the youngsters I rescued last summer in June, the ones who escaped in to my neighbour's garden in July! Not sure of exact age but as they were still growing fast probably about a year old now. They are now about 11cm long so still quite young

Same story as turtlegirl. I got them as hatchlings last summer so probably a little younger than a year. I didnt want to speculate about what sex they are because I figured it would still be too early to tell. The tail is certainly already longer on the 'long' one but I havent noticed a difference in the length of the claws. I understand this difference is not so distinct in maps as it is with sliders.

hi turtle lovers... if these are babies then the widning of their shells is nothing to worry about at this stage... they will get thier natural look when they start to reach adult hood so don't worry... we see this here a lot in maps when they are little...
