i av read a few threads about letting youre turtle out for a walk..is it really ok to do this?i allways thought it was a bad idea as i thought he might pick some thing up off the floor or get too cold..i put him outside for a few hours in summer in a kids paddling pool if its hot and sunny..allso any suggestions on what is best a tank with a hood or a tank without and some clamp lamps?i currently have one with a hood as thats the tank i got with him it has a uv light strip and i made me own lamp stand with heat resistant electrick cable and ceramic lamp holder and a exoterra sun glo basking lamp, does anybody know if having the hood adds to the smell with the humidity??i will be upgrading my tank to a 40 gallon and external cannister filter in a couple months been saving hard and i am nearly there so any suggestions would be appreciated..

hi tezd, letting your turtle out for a walk around the house or garden is highly recommend by us... we do all the time, it helps the turtle / terrapin to get some exercise as they would in the wild wondering from river to river etc... turtles don't have any weight in the water so this exercise will keep them fit by making them use their muscles to lift them up and walk around... most turtles just seem to spend their lives being fed and swimming and basking just like a couch potato so keep them fit but beware these animals will hide and get up to mistief if allowed as you might have read before.. it also helps the turtle to become a little less startled and more friendly as you will have to handle them more so they get used to you... as for the filter and tank many people have different set ups so either is good providing your offering them everything they need then all is well... i will say however we find you will need the next size up filter to cope with the cleaning of the water with these animals as they can be very messy eaters etc.. we use eheim 2026 filters here at turtle rescue simply because they as so easy to clean and do the job in hand by using a good external filter with regular water changes you will find you won't have that smell to deal with if you should need any help with setting this up please contact me...
the eheim 2026 or eheim 2028 are both on e-bay second hand for around the £40 mark including p&p ...

thanks for that wayne its a big help..must say i ad never heard of eheim filters i was thinking of a fluval external, but if you say eheim is good then thats good enuff for me..these internal fish filters are no good at all..i had my eye on a 40 galllon tank with stand and everything included was 231 pound but av now decided it will be wiser to just buy a 40 gallon tank on its own and with the money i save i can use it for a decent external filter..i never reallu understood till recently how important the water condition is to turtles, well you live an learn eh..cheers ..
